Burnett and Steinbach lead Spartans to victory over St. Teresa

They’ve gone to Maroa. Georgetown. Bismarck. And Decatur.

So far, the undefeated St. Joseph-Ogden High School volleyball team has yet to play a home match this season. That changes on Tuesday evening when the Spartans welcome in Cissna Park for a 6 p.m. nonconference match.

Not that the road hasn’t treated the Spartans well. SJO coach Abby McDonald’s program carries a 4-0 record into the match with the Timberwolves.

SJO’s latest win transpired on Monday night, with the Spartans pulling out a 25-16, 20-25, 25-20 nonconference win at St. Teresa.

Kennedi Burnett posted a triple-double with 15 kills, 10 digs and 10 aces. Becca Steinbach was also key with 30 assists and 12 digs, while Addie Roesch contributed eight kills, 11 digs and two aces. Shayne Immke (seven kills) and Hannah Fox (13 digs) also played a pivotal role in the win.

Prior to Monday night, SJO outlasted host Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin 25-14, 18-25, 25-13 in a nonconference match last Thursday night. Burnett supplied 12 digs to go along with eight digs, while Steinbach handed out 16 assists and Immke added nine kills. Immke and Rachel Divan also chipped in defensively with two blocks apiece.

The night before SJO beat BHRA, the Spartans handled host Georgetown-Ridge Farm with ease, topping the Buffaloes 25-14, 25-3 last Wednesday. Immke registered eight kills, Burnett had six kills and three aces, Taylor Hug distributed 11 assists and Taylor Wells pitched in with three blocks and two kills.

Once Tuesday night’s match with Cissna Park concludes, the Spartans will hit the road again for a 7:15 p.m. nonconference match on Thursday at Teutopolis.
