Miller wins twice, but SJO wrestling opens season with two losses in LeRoy

After wrestling in the spring and early summer last school year, the St. Joseph-Ogden High School wrestling team is back to competing in its traditional place on the calendar again.

The Spartans started the season this past Saturday with two matches in LeRoy, but SJO sustained a 33-25 loss to Urbana and a 60-16 loss to the host Panthers.
In the loss against Urbana, 11 of the 14 weight classes featured forfeits. SJO won two of the three contested matches, with Conrad Miller producing a pin in 22 seconds at 160 pounds and Quincy Jones compiling a pin in 2:01 at 220 pounds. Matt Falls lost a 7-2 decision at 145 in the other contested match.

LeRoy picked up 48 of its 60 points against SJO via forfeits, with five contested matches taking place. Emmitt Holt at 120 pounds won by pin in 1:36 and Miller picked up his second win of the day with a pin in 3:03 at 170 pounds. Holden Brazelton had the other win for SJO with a 7-2 major decision at 126 pounds.
Falls lost by pin in 3:46 at 138 pounds and Jones lost by pin in 41 seconds at 220 pounds in the other two contested matches.

SJO is set to hit the mat again at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Catlin for a dual match against Oakwood/Salt Fork. The Spartans will then travel to Petersburg on Saturday for its first tournament this season at the PORTA Invitational, with action set to begin at 8:30 a.m. It’s one of five tournaments SJO is slated to compete in this season, along with the Unity Invitational in Tolono (Dec. 18), Abe’s Rumble in Springfield (Dec. 29-30), the Illini Prairie Conference Meet in Monticello (Jan. 14-15) and the Quincy Notre Dame tournament (Jan. 29).
