Gherna resigns from village board

Andy Gherna is resigning from the St. Joseph Village Board.

Gherna announced that the July 23 board meeting will be his last.

Gherna’s term currently goes through May 2021.

Gherna and his family have sold their home that is within the village limits and are moving to a home just outside the village.

“I had my house for sale for quite a while,” he said. “I finally sold it and had to buy another.”

Gherna said his checklist of items for his new home included staying within the village, unfortunately that check box was left unfulfilled.

“I am very proud to have been a trustee for the last five years and I am very pleased with being elected by our community,” he said. “It shows that they trust you and that they believe you will make good decisions.”

In five years, Gherna worked on the proposed residential TIF district, the streets and alley committee and the transportation master plan.

“I have tried to always put the community first before anything else,” he said.

Mayor Tami Fruhling-Voges said she appreciated all the hard work Gherna had done on behalf of the village.

“We appreciate all that you have done,” she said.

Since Gherna was elected as a Republican, the Republican Caucus Committee will nominate a replacement for his position.

The committee is made up of Dan McElroy, Todd Pence, Jeff Van Buskirk, Max Painter and Amy McElroy. If any village resident is interested in filling the position they should contact Fruhling-Voges who will pass their name on to the committee.

Fruhling-Voges said in the event there are multiple residents interested the committee interviews the applicants before nominating their selection.
