Solar project proposed at sports complex

The Village of St. Joseph may be going green.

The Village has taken the initial steps to explore a solar energy project at the sports complex, said Village Administrator Joe Hackney.

The Village is applying for federal and state incentives to fund the project.

If approved the project would cover 3.5 acres of the available 34.74 acres of farm ground.

It is estimated that it would generate between $114, 599 and $171,898 in annual revenue.

Revenue from the project would go to fund St. Joseph parks.

“With an estimated payback period of 5.5 to 8.3 years, the system’s earnings would be allocated to parks and recreation programs, which currently lack a sustainable funding source and are heavily reliant on general fund revenues,” Hackney said. ” A final decision on funding the project is at least a year away.”
