The St. Joseph-Ogden girls’ tennis team picked up a close win playing on the University of Illinois campus, while the Spartans’ boys’ soccer team sustained a close defeat in their Illini Prairie Conference opener. Here is a quick rundown of what happened Thursday with the Spartans:
In girls’ tennis
Farber, Dietiker stand out
SJO defeated Pontiac 5-4 on Thursday at the Atkins Tennis Center on the UI campus in Urbana. The Spartans won four of six singles matches and one doubles match to prevail against the Indians.
Senior Madison Farber stood out at No. 2 singles for SJO, easily winning 6-0, 6-0. Junior Avarie Dietiker came through with a clutch win at No. 3 singles for the Spartans as she rallied for a 6-7 (4), 6-1, 10-8 victory. Sophomore Alissa Knight won 6-1, 3-0 at No. 5 singles and junior Aubree Profancik won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
SJO won its No. 3 doubles match, with junior Ava Bronowski and sophomore Korrine Travis winning 6-1, 6-1.
The Spartans are scheduled to resume play on Saturday at the Paris doubles tournament before getting back on the court at Atkins next Monday with a dual match against St. Teresa that starts at 4:30 p.m.
In boys’ soccer
Saints top Spartans
The Illini Prairie Conference opener on Thursday night for SJO didn’t end with the result the Spartans wanted after Bloomington Central Catholic left Dick Duval Field with a 3-2 victory.
The Spartans are now 7-3 on the season and 0-1 in Illini Prairie matches, with Thursday night’s outcome ending a two-match winning streak for SJO.
Seniors Steven Newman and Jasper Marriott each scored a goal for SJO, with senior Tyler Hess and sophomore Lucas Stevens each delivering an assist. Junior Miles Atwood made four saves in goal.
SJO is set to get back on the field at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday when it hosts Newton in a nonconference home match at Dick Duval Field.
What’s on tap
The SJO football team (4-0) hosts Rantoul (0-4) at 7 p.m. on Friday at Dick Duval Field in the Spartans’ homecoming game. On Saturday morning, the SJO girls’ tennis team plays in the Paris doubles tournament that starts at 8:30 a.m., the SJO cross-country teams travel to Peoria to compete in the Richard Spring Invitational and the SJO boys’ soccer team hosts Newton at 9:30 a.m.
On Monday, the SJO girls’ tennis team plays St. Teresa at 4:30 p.m. at Atkins Tennis Center on the UI campus, while the SJO volleyball team hosts Marshall at 7 p.m. in a nonconference match.
