Cramer, Jacob come up clutch in SJO girls’ basketball’s win against Tuscola

The St. Joseph-Ogden High School girls’ basketball team has fared well under pressure so far this season.

The Spartans’ latest example of this happened on Monday night with a 50-46 overtime home win against Tuscola in nonconference action. It was SJO’s second overtime win of the season after the Spartans defeated Paxton-Buckley-Loda 45-43 in overtime on Nov. 22 to win the Falcon/Bunnie Tip-Off Classic in Fisher.

Monday’s win against Tuscola transpired thanks to some clutch three-point shooting in the extra four-minute period after both teams played to a 42-42 tie through the end of regulation, with Tuscola rallying in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

SJO trailed 11-7 at the end of the first quarter and 20-19 at halftime before taking a 35-29 lead into the fourth quarter.

SJO senior guard Katie Cramer and sophomore guard Payton Jacob both drained three-pointers in the overtime period to give the Spartans just enough of an advantage.

Cramer relied on four three-pointers to finish with a team-high 14 points, while senior forward Taylor Barnes also knocked down two three-pointers en route to nine points.

Senior guard Abby Behrens scored six of her eight points in the fourth quarter, while Jacob (seven points) and junior guard Atleigh Hamilton (six points) also factored into the scoring for SJO.

The Spartans (5-1) continue facing tough nonconference opponents at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Danville before they make a trip on Saturday to Fithian for a 6 p.m. game at Oakwood.
