Cohen, Seeley help guide SJO soccer to win

With less than two weeks left in the regular season, the St. Joseph-Ogden High School soccer team picked up a 3-2 home win against Georgetown-Ridge Farm/Westville this past Saturday.
The victory was SJO’s first win since Sept. 13 against Oakwood/Salt Fork, ending a seven-match winless streak for the Spartans (3-11-2).
Seniors Zac Seeley and Luke Cohen each netted goals for SJO in the win against the Buffaloes.

SJO also learned its postseason assignment when the Illinois High School Association released playoff pairings last Friday. The Spartans received the eighth seed in its sub-sectional and will open the postseason at home at 11 a.m. on Oct. 12 with a regional quarterfinal match against Schlarman. If the Spartans knock off the Hilltoppers, they’ll face top seed St. Thomas More at 4 p.m. on Oct. 15 in a regional semifinal match at STM. The regional championship game is slated for 4 p.m. on Oct. 18 at STM, with No. 4 Uni High and No. 5 Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond meeting in the other regional semifinal match.

Prior to the victory against G-RF/Westville, SJO suffered a 2-1 loss at home to Argenta-Oreana last Thursday, a 2-0 loss at Rantoul on Sept. 24, a 3-3 home tie against Chillicothe IVC on Sept. 21, a 7-0 loss at St. Thomas More on Sept. 19 and a 5-0 home loss to Monticello on Sept. 17.

SJO gets back in action at 4:30 p.m. on Monday at Judah Christian before resuming Illini Prairie Conference play at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at home against Unity before ending the week with road matches at Bloomington Central Catholic at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at at Warrensburg-Latham at 10 a.m. on Oct. 5.
