Frick, Brooks deliver, but SJO girls’ basketball loses twice

The St. Joseph-Ogden High School girls’ basketball team kept it close in its two Illini Prairie Conference games last week, but the Spartans were unable to pull out a victory in either game.
SJO lost 42-35 to Chillicothe IVC this past Thursday night at home and also lost 47-44 at Prairie Central last Monday night.

The Spartans carry a 7-13 record, including 1-2 in Illini Prairie play, entering Monday’s 7 p.m. home game against St. Thomas More.

Here’s who contributed during the Spartans’ two games last week and what’s ahead on SJO’s slate:

Grey Ghosts too much for Spartans
The Spartans received the bulk of their scoring in their loss to Chillicothe IVC from a pair of freshmen.
But the young talent wasn’t enough to lift the Spartans to a win, with the Grey Ghosts ahead 17-9 at the end of the first quarter, 26-22 at halftime and 32-24 to start the fourth quarter.

Freshman forward Addie Brooks scored a team-high 12 points for SJO, with all of her points coming after she made four three-pointers. Junior guard Addison Frick was also proficient from beyond the three-point line, making a trio of three-pointers to account for all nine of her points.

Freshman guard Katie Ericksen added seven points, while senior guard Kaytlyn Baker (three points), senior guard Olivia Baltzell (two points) and junior guard Addie Seggebruch (two points) rounding out the scoring for SJO.

Hawks rally by Spartans in fourth quarter
SJO nearly had an impressive Illini Prairie win in its grasp.

But Prairie Central was able to edge the Spartans for a three-point win in Fairbury.

SJO trailed 11-7 at the end of the first quarter, but held a slim 20-19 halftime lead before the Spartans went into the fourth quarter ahead 35-30.

Frick scored a team-high 16 points for SJO, making four three-pointers. Senior guard Taylor Hug joined Frick in double figures with 10 points, while Seggebruch contributed seven points and junior forward Addy Martinie came through with six points.

Baker (three points) and Ericksen (two points) also chipped in.

What’s next
SJO stays in league play this week, hosting St. Thomas More at 7 p.m. Monday before hitting the road to play at Monticello at 7 p.m. Thursday.
