Village expected to accept bid for Boy Scout Building

The village is expected to accept a bid for the former Boy Scout Building tonight.

Roche and Heather Cain submitted the only bid on the property located at
202 East Lincoln Street.

The village accepted bids on the property through Sept. 7.

The property, which is zoned commercial downtown, has previously been a jail and a village hall.

For years the village has let the Boy Scouts use the buildings for meetings. The building is 947 sq. Feet and is more than 100 years old.

In the bid, the Cains stated that they would use the building to expand seating for their restaurant, Roch’s, located next door to the building.

“We feel the purchase of this building would be a positive addition to our business and the community with the increase of available seating as well as the possibility to allow for private party accommodations,” the bid stated.

The bid stated that the village also allowed Roch’s to place outdoor garbage cans and a grease trap on the property and if that land was no longer available they would have no space for those items.

The Cains submitted a bid of $10,000. The proposal said the outside of the building was in great shape but the inside would take substantial upgrading including heat, air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, and other general upgrades.

“We are prepared to accomplish this task,” the Cains said in their bid, stating Roche had 46 years of experience in the construction trade.

The Cains have resided in St. Joseph for 30 years and raised four sons in the community. They have owned and operated Roch’s for 10 years.

The VIllage Board meets tonight at 7 p.m. at Village Hall located at 207 E. Lincoln.
