The St. Joseph-Ogden girls’ tennis team cruised to a win against Schlarman, while the Spartans’
volleyball and boys’ soccer teams continued their seasons. Here is a recap of what happened
Wednesday and Thursday with the Spartans:
In girls’ tennis
Farber, Schmitz stand out
St. Joseph-Ogden earned a 9-0 road win against Schlarman on Wednesday at the Danville
Tennis Center. Seniors Madison Farber at No. 1 singles and Sophie Schmitz at No. 5 singles
each won their matches without allowing a point en route to 8-0 victories. Senior Shelby Warns
won 8-1 at No. 2 singles, junior Avarie Dietiker won 8-3 at No. 3 singles, sophomore Alissa
Knight won 8-3 at No. 4 singles and junior Aubree Profancik won 8-1 at No. 6 singles to sweep
all the singles matches for SJO.
The Spartans also won all three doubles matches, with sophomore Nora Buckley and junior
Kenley Ray winning 8-0 at No. 1 doubles. Juniors Ava Bronowski and Korinne Travis won 8-1 at
No. 2 doubles and sophomore Sydney Farber and senior Audrie Helfrich won 8-0 at No. 3
singles.
The Spartans are set to resume play at 4:30 p.m. on Monday against Maroa-Forsyth at Forsyth
Park.
In volleyball
Williams, McDonald help Spartans salvage split
A long set favored St. Joseph-Ogden in the end on Wednesday night. But not on Thursday
night.
As a result, SJO could not increase its win streak to three matches, with host Pontiac sweeping
the Spartans 25-20, 33-31 on Thursday night in Illini Prairie Conference action.
The loss against Pontiac came after SJO fended off Salt Fork for a 31-29, 25-17 nonconference
home win on Wednesday night.
The Spartans are now 14-10 on the season, including 2-3 in the Illini Prairie, before resuming
their season at 7 p.m. next Tuesday with an Illini Prairie match at Bloomington Central Catholic.
Senior Emerson Williams supplied a team-high 10 kills in the loss against Pontiac, while senior
Addi Stevens and junior Vivian Smith each added six kills. Senior Hadley McDonald (five kills)
and junior Raegan Wheatley (four kills) also chipped in offensively.
Junior Megan Kearney handed out 22 assists and served two aces, with sophomore Mia Miller
adding seven assists. McDonald had a team-high 10 digs, while junior Ava Alexander (nine digs)
and Kearney (eight digs) also contributed defensively.
During the win against Salt Fork, Williams and McDonald each finished with six kills, while Smith
supplied five kills and Kearney contributed four kills.
Kearney directed the offense to the tune of 17 assists, while Williams served two aces.
Alexander and Williams propelled the defense, with Alexander making 26 digs and Williams
making 15 digs.
In boys’ soccer
St. Joseph-Ogden had a difficult time slowing down Manteno, with the visiting Panthers leaving
with a 7-2 nonconference victory on Thursday at Dick Duval Field in St. Joseph.
The loss dropped SJO to 12-6-2 on the season.
Senior Tyler Hess and sophomore Lucas Stevens each scored a goal for the Spartans, while
senior Nico Harris added an assist.
SJO is set to begin the final week of the regular season at 4:30 p.m. Monday with a
nonconference match at Cornerstone in Bloomington.
