Myren, Pence help Spartans start off season on right note

The St. Joseph-Ogden golf team has steadily improved during its first two weeks of competition in a pandemic-abbreviated season.

The Spartans, who are set to play Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin at 4 p.m. on Friday in a match at Harrison Park Golf Course in Danville, are fresh off a win on Tuesday against Judah Christian at Willow Pond Golf Course in Rantoul.

SJO compiled a team score of 193 compared to 237 for Judah Christian. Ty Pence earned medalist honors with a 41 for SJO, while Jacob Kern contributed a 46. McGuire Atwood (52) and Jack Robertson (54) also chipped in to round out SJO’s team score.

The win on Tuesday was preceded by a victory last Thursday against Fisher during a dual match at Willow Pond, with SJO compiling a team score of 188 compared to 199 for Fisher.

All four of SJO’s team scores were in the 40s, with Riley Myren leading the charge with a 44. Pence (47), Kern (48) and Logan Smith (49) also factored into SJO’s team score.

Before the match against Fisher, SJO suffered a dual match loss against Schlarman on Aug. 26 at Danville Country Club. Kern carded a 46 to post the best score by the Spartans, with Robertson (50), Carter (52) and Pence (53) chipping in.

SJO opened the season on Aug. 24 by playing in a six-team meet hosted by Centennial at the University of Illinois Golf Course in Savoy. The Spartans placed fifth, producing a team score of 394. Mattoon won the match with a 317, followed by Monticello (321), Centennial (360), St. Thomas More (374), SJO and St. Teresa (408).

Pence shot a 93 to pace the Spartans, with Kern (97) and Smith (98) all registering rounds below 100.

After Friday’s match against BHRA, the Spartans are set to compete at 4 p.m. next Tuesday against Centennial and STM at Legends Golf Course in Champaign and then play at 4 p.m. next Wednesday against Urbana at the UI Course in Savoy.
