May 10, 2024 Local Stories in and Around St. Joseph, Illinois

Live at St. Joseph Village Board, Dec. 12, 2023

I am here so you don’t have to be but there’s also a ton of people here. I am not totally sure why but we shall see. #exciting.

Stan Harper is here. 11 years on the Champaign County Board. Farm in the area. #hespublicservantroyalty #forreal

Discussing St. Joseph pulling their objection to wind farms.

Champaign County has the most stringent setbacks, ect.

The vote of the zoning board 7-0 to go with the constituents.

This is a fight that needs to be fought to protect Champaign County.

Harper is discussing a law Pritzker passed last year that basically takes local control away from municipalities and counties regarding wind farms. It makes it very, very difficult to fight them. It just happened in Piatt County.

Discussing the flicker effect with wind farms.

I will say that I was up in Paxton today and it was very sunny. I was driving by a wind farm and was momentarily like WHAT IS THAT? It was very noticeable. It took me a few moments to realize it was the windmill. Living with that would be… weird I think. Maybe? Maybe you get used to it.

“In the middle of the night, they passed this bill.”

OMG It’s Apex. They literally just did this in Piatt County. #whataretheodds

Harper saying they are planning one in Champaign County.

Someone has offered the village property. Lawyer says the papers are in his possession. Basically, the Baptist Church is offering the village their church building. Judd is retiring. They are going to use it as a village hall and community events. #soclosetomyhouse #soconvienent.

The current village hall would be sold.

James Arndt is here to discuss economic development. #WHATISCOMING #MAKEITGOOD

A retailer has expressed interest. They are looking for a site. They are working on a contract for one property now. #WHATISIT

A HOTEL IS INTERESTED. They are doing due diligence. #thiswouldbesogreat
Two restaurants are interested.

Don’t @me about how you don’t want a dollar general or a burger king. I have no idea what it is. #positivethoughtsonly

Joe saying the feedback has been positive. That a lot of people thought they should have been in St. Joseph already. Joe talking marketing. Talking about how landowners don’t market themselves here sometimes so the village needs to do it.

Arndt saying that the village’s proposed TIF has come up in conversations.

Hotel feasibility study discussion. This hotel chain wants to go to rural communities. They have a hotel in Altamont but they need to do a study to see if it would work here.

I think a hotel would do great here.

Tammy Vallee asking if they are only talking to the one hotel brand.

The study would cost $15,000.

The study would be able to be used for any hotel.

Max said he is happy to spend the money if it may lead someplace. Angela Page is hesitant to spend the money unless a hotel is actually feasible. They want 60 percent occupancy.

This is the first time the village has one economic development.

Also, shout out to MX Electric for sponsoring our live blogs.

Art making a motion to funding the hotel feasibility study. Mike Sennert is taking the minutes. #jackofalltrades

It passed. They are doing it.

Discussing upgrading gas and power to the wastewater treatment plant. It’s going to cost. $7,714.81.

It’s storage facility time! They are listening to a presentation from my favorite engineer Don Wauither with Berns and Clancy. I’ve been at this job too long if I have a favorite engineer.

My favorite engineer is talking up the project. Basically, it’s not a huge new burden on the village and they have done their due diligence.

The details he’s presenting are crazy. These developers are really going all out to try and get ahead of any issues. I think these are the men who have the storage units in Monticello. If so, they are really nice.

Solar discussion now.

I am freezing. Will the new village hall be better insulated? #ihope

they are still discussing solar.

Tami is thanking Ashley, Fire Family and the Women’s Club for all the amazing holiday events.

BREAKING NEWS: This is the last night to sign up for the santa 5K!

Meeting adjourned.
