Sparty party: A daily roundup of SJO varsity sports (Sept. 16, 2026)

The St. Joseph-Ogden volleyball team kept its win streak intact, and the SJO boys’ golf team
competed at the Champaign County tournament. Here is a quick rundown of what happened
Tuesday with the Spartans:

In volleyball
Smith, Spartans rally for win

Losing the first set to St. Teresa didn’t deter St. Joseph-Ogden on Tuesday night. Instead, the
Spartans responded and rallied for a 25-27, 25-12, 25-25-21 nonconference home win against
the Bulldogs.

SJO is now 10-4 on the season and carries a four-match win streak into Wednesday night’s
nonconference match at Danville.

Junior Vivian Smith led the way with nine kills for the Spartans on Tuesday night, while seniors
Addi Stevens and Emerson Williams each put down seven kills. Junior Lyla Patton added six
kills and junior Raegan Wheatley chipped in five kills to round out the offensive efforts.

Senior Alivia Learned and junior Megan Kearney kept feeding the balls to the SJO hitters, with
Learned supplying 15 assists and Kearney contributing 12 assists. Kearney also delivered three
aces and seven digs, with senior Hadley McDonald and junior Ava Alexander delivering two
aces. Alexander and McDonald helped lead the defense as the pair each came through with 18
digs.

In golf
Loschen has low round

St. Joseph-Ogden carded a team score of 354 during Tuesday’s 18-hole Champaign County
tournament held at Brookhill Golf Course in Rantoul.
That left the Spartans seventh out of the 10 teams competing. Mahomet-Seymour won the
event with a 304, followed by Champaign Central with a 308. The M-S junior varsity team

finished third with 319, St. Thomas More placed fourth with a 329 and Rantoul/Paxton-Buckley-
Loda took fifth with a 330. The Central junior varsity team shot a 332.

Centennial, Judah Christian and Urbana also had golfers compete, but none of those three
schools had enough golfers to comprise a team score.
Senior Garrett Loschen compiled the low round of the day for the Spartans with an 81, while
freshman Noah Resendiz had the next best round for SJO with an 89. Freshman Calvin Clem
(90) and junior Conlan Gill (94) also contributed to the SJO team score.

In boys’ soccer
Match with Monticello postponed

Rain, heat and thunderstorms all played a role in St. Joseph-Ogden’s match at Monticello
getting postponed on Tuesday.

The scheduled Illini Prairie Conference opener for the Spartans (7-2) is now pushed back to
4:30 p.m. on Sept. 25 at Monticello.

SJO is now set to open Illini Prairie play at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday when it hosts Bloomington
Central Catholic at Dick Duval Field in St. Joseph.

What’s on tap
The SJO volleyball team is slated to play at Danville at 7 p.m. on Wednesday for the Spartans’
third match in as many days, while the SJO boys’ golf team is scheduled to play Monticello in a
dual match at Monticello Golf Club at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
