10 things you don’t know about me: Shannon Singleton

This week we asked second-grade teacher Shannon Singleton to tell us 10 things we don’t know about her.

You will never guess what concert she is going to this summer!

What was the name of your first childhood pet?
I have two younger brothers growing up and each of them had a pet – a guinea pig and a dog. I did not get my first pet until three years ago! He is a cockapoo named Huxley.

What is the best advice you have ever been given?
I’ve been blessed with many people in my life that have influenced who I am and how I work. I can thank my mentor, Norma McDannald, for the many years of advice and guidance. My favorite thing she always said was, “Looking ahead…”. I tend to get caught up in the “here and now” but need to remember that when you are spending your days with 22 amazing young people that you have to also have an eye on what’s coming to TRY to prepare for anything!

What is something you carry with you at all times?
My phone…I have a case that carries my IDs and I am off. That being said, my family will tell you that I have a habit of leaving it at home more often than I would like to admit (and my glasses).

Where is your favorite place you have ever traveled to?
My favorite vacation to date was to Del Rey Beach, Florida when my kids were much younger. We spent the week in a small “mom and pop” resort with no daily plans. We ended up spending our days on the beach swimming, reading, building sandcastles and having fun. Then we would go out to dinner somewhere in town and just repeat that all week. All four of us will tell you that it was the best week we can remember!

What is a TV Show or Movie you can watch over and over?
Our family has movies that we watch every year at certain times (moreso when my kids were younger and at home)…Baseball season = The Sandlot and Field of Dreams. Football season = Rudy. Hocus Pocus = Halloween. Every and all Christmas movies on repeat all season!

What is your favorite restaurant? Breakfast is The Original House of Pancakes for sure! Friday nights in Monticello you can find us at Las Maria’s on the square!

What is a hobby you have that may surprise people? I love flowers. I love to be outside in the spring, summer and fall. We add to our flowerbeds every year. It’s been a slow process but we have BIG PLANS!

What made you want to be a teacher? In seventh grade, I had a science teacher named Mr. Hehn. Science was not one of my favorite classes but he made it so much fun. He made me feel important and helped me to understand concepts that seemed foreign at the time. I’ve been blessed with lots of amazing teachers but this was the first time I realized that it might be something that I wanted to pursue.

What concert would you want tickets to?
Music is a big part of our lives at the Singleton house. We like all kinds of music! My daughter and I are off to see Taylor Swift in June. We are seeing Fastball in August. We’ve been to Def Leppard and Journey several summers in a row. I would love to see Garth Brooks in Las Vegas and the
Zac Brown Band live!

What sports teams do you root for? I am a diehard CUBS fan right here! We make several trips to Wrigley Field every summer. March Madness is a huge deal for the Singleton family and we have multiple TV’s going at once. Favorite team for this….any underdog!
