Stegall, Mabry and rest of SJO boys’ cross-country team looking to make some history

A state championship in 1991. Another state title in 1992. And a third-place finish in 2015.

The 2021 St. Joseph-Ogden High School boys’ cross-country team gets a chance to add to those memorable seasons on Saturday.
SJO qualified its whole team for the Class 1A state meet at Detweiller Park, placing second at last Saturday’s St. Teresa Sectional at Hickory Point Golf Club in Forsyth.

The Spartans will vie for a state championship this Saturday, with runners set to toe the starting line at 10 a.m. in Peoria.

Considered one of the top teams in 1A all season, the Spartans finished behind Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond at the 20-team sectional meet. ALAH compiled a team score of 75 points, with SJO coming in second with 87 points. Monticello (144), St. Teresa (152) and Newton (160) rounded out the top five schools.

Senior Luke Stegall paced SJO in Forsyth with a sixth-place finish in 16 minutes, 38.17 seconds. Fellow senior Charlie Mabry finished eighth in 16:43.69 to give SJO two runners in the top 10.

Junior Peyton Wendell came in 21st in 17:09.48, with senior Elijah Mock (17:19.2, 27th) and sophomore Carson Maroon (17:25.74, 33rd) rounding out the top five runners for SJO.
