Thomey, Emmert help SJO soccer continue early success

Two days without any matches might seem like a long break for the St. Joseph-Ogden High School soccer team.

Then again, with the way the Spartans have opened the season, coach Bill DeJarnette’s program might not want to take a break.

The Spartans continued their solid start with a 4-1 home win against nonconference foe Schlarman on Monday. Collin Thomey and Jared Emmert each scored two goals for SJO (3-1-1), with Garrett Siems, Jackson Greer and Brennan Haake each picking up an assist.

Hunter Ketchum made 11 saves for the Spartans, who led 3-0 at halftime.

On Saturday, the Spartans tied Danville 2-2 at home. Danville led 1-0 at halftime before a goal off a penalty kick by Will Page tied the match at 1. The Vikings went ahead again 2-1, but Aiden Cromwell tied the match again with a goal off an assist from Thomey. Ketchum finished with six saves in the match.

Prior to Saturday, the Spartans sustained their first loss of the season, falling 4-2 to Uni High in a nonconference home match last Thursday. The Spartans took a 1-0 lead off a goal by Thomey that was assisted by Spenser Wilson. Uni High led 2-1 at halftime before SJO tied the match at 2 following a goal from Cromwell that was assisted by Siems. But Uni High responded with two more goals to earn the win. Ketchum finished with 16 saves.

Next up for SJO: A 4:30 p.m. match at Hoopeston Area on Thursday, the team’s lone remaining match this week.
