Postseason play begins for St. Joseph Middle School baseball, softball teams

Whether the St. Joseph Middle School would have baseball and softball teams this school year was uncertain. All because of factors outside of their control.

But both teams have been able to have a regular season amid the COVID-19 pandemic and will begin their quest for some postseason wins this week.
No state tournament will take place this year because of the pandemic, but a chance to win a regional championship is there.

The St. Joseph Middle School baseball team is the top seed in its Class 2A regional and will host No. 4 Fisher at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

If the Panthers, who ended the regular season on a four-game win streak, knock off Fisher, a regional championship game awaits this upcoming Saturday against either No. 2 Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley or No. 3 LeRoy. Those two teams are set to meet at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday in Gibson City. The regional championship game will take place at the higher-seeded team’s field.

The St. Joseph Middle School softball team is the second team in its five-team Class 2A regional and will host No. 3 Hoopeston Area at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday in a regional semifinal game. Win that and the Panthers will play Saturday for a regional title. Westville is the top seed in the regional and will play either No. 4 Oakwood or No. 5 Bismarck-Henning at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday in Westville. The higher-seeded team will host Saturday’s regional championship game.
