Weekend Family Fun Guide for Jan. 17-20

Friday, January 17
MLK Jr. Event
The annual county wide Dr. Martin Luther King Junior celebration will take place at the Vineyard Church at 1500 N. Lincoln in Urbana from 3 to 5 p.m. The event will commemorate King’s legacy by celebrating his mission and legacy. Sampson Davis, M.D, a practicing Surgeon in New Jersey is the keynote speaker.

YOGA
Yoga in the Woods: New Year Renewal with Glow by Lola will take place at the Izaak Walton Cabin at Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Join the Champaign County Forest Preserve as they renew their energy and spirit for the New Year! Lola, of Glow by Lola, will lead you through flowing poses, hand mudras, chanting, and essential oils all while receiving some hands-on Reiki energy healing in Lake of the Woods’ beautiful Izaak Walton Cabin! It may be cold outside, but it is warm and cozy inside where will be able to view the gorgeous winter scene from inside the cabin. Illini athletics
Go see the University of Illinois Women’s Gymnastics team take on Michigan at Huff Hall in a free event. The meet starts at 1 p.m. After the meet all kids in 8th grade and under are invited to participate in a free youth clinic with the team.

Sunday, January 19
MLK Jr. Event
The 35th annual Dr. Martin Luthern King Jr. Service of Celebration will take place at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, located at 500 South Goodwin Avenue in Urbana from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be a keynote address and a performance by a community choir.

Monday, January 20
Champaign County Forest Preserve Owl Prowl
School’s Out so visit the Middle Fork River Forest Preserve from 3-4 p.m. for an Owl Prowl activity. Great Horned Owls begin nesting in January, which means there is a good chance of seeing or hearing a live owl in the wild this time of year. The event will begin indoors with a presentation on native Illinois owls, dissect owl pellets, then head outside for a hike to listen and look for owls! Recommended for ages 6 & up. $5 per person. The 35th annual MLK Unity Breakfast will take place at the Vineyard Church, located at 1500 N. Lincoln Avenue in Urbana from 8 a.m. to noon.

MLK Jr. Event
A Martin Luther King Junior Celebration will take place at the Museum of the Grand Prairie, located at the Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve from 1-3 p.m. Join Museum of the Grand Prairie as they explore the rich cultural heritage of the African American community in Champaign County on this Martin Luther King Day! Come to learn about the life of Dr. King, celebrate his legacy and learn how we can keep his mission alive today.

Swimming
Take a break from the cold weather and go swimming! The Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center, located at 102 E Michigan, is hosting a School’s Out Swim event from 1:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. There is a $3 spectator fee and swimmers cost $6 per person for kids four and up.
