The St. Joseph-Ogden volleyball team kept its undefeated start to the season intact on Thursday night, while the Spartans’ boys’ golf team had a solid performance on the course on Thursday. Here is a quick rundown:
In volleyball
Kearney, Smith spark latest win
A strong first set carried into the second set as SJO defeated Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin 25-15, 25-22 on Thursday night in a nonconference home match in St. Joseph.
The win improves SJO to 3-0 in the first week of the season.
Junior Megan Kearney dropped in a team-high seven kills to go along with handing out seven assists and making four digs to pace the Spartans.
Fellow junior Vivian Smith added five kills, while senior Hadley McDonald finished with four kills and a team-high 10 digs.
Other notable highlights included senior Alivia Learned handing out 12 assists and junior Ava Alexander contributing eight digs. Senior Emerson Williams (three kills, six digs) and junior Raegan Wheatley (two kills) also chipped in.
The Spartans are set to have the weekend off and will try to remain unbeaten on the season when they travel to play at Mahomet-Seymour on Tuesday night. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Mahomet.
In boys’ golf
Loschen, Miller stand out
SJO finished second out of four teams on Thursday at Willow Pond Golf Course in Rantoul.
Hoopeston Area posted the best score with a 161, while SJO compiled a team score of 176. Armstrong-Potomac (186) and Fisher (220) also competed.
Seniors Garrett Loschen and Finn Miller posted the top two scores for the Spartans, with Loschen carding a 42 and Miller shooting a 43. Fellow senior Tripp Palmer wasn’t far behind with a 45 and freshman Calvin Clem delivered a 46.
The Spartans will have the weekend off before going back to Willow Pond on Tuesday, where SJO will tee off against Unity starting at 4 p.m.
What’s on tap Saturday
The SJO cross-country team begins its season at 8:30 a.m. at the Doc Acklin Memorial Invite in Paris, while the SJO boys’ soccer team carries a 2-0 record into a 10 a.m. home nonconference match against Iroquois West at Dick Duval Field in St. Joseph.
