URBANA, IL – The Champaign County Zoning Board of Appeals is holding a public hearing on a proposed 12-month moratorium on data center development in Champaign County for facilities with at least 10,000 square feet of processing area.
Andrew Rehn, Climate Policy Director at Prairie Rivers Network, will attend in support of the moratorium and be available for media interviews before the hearing.
Date: Thursday, March 12, 2026
Time: 6:30pm (Andrew available at 6:15pm for interviews/comment)
Location: Shields-Carter Meeting Room, Bennett Administrative Center, 102 East Main Street, Downtown Urbana, IL
Meeting Notice
The proposed moratorium, if approved by the ZBA and passed by the full board, would allow time for board members to research and adopt a comprehensive ordinance regulating the development of “big” data centers within county borders. The Champaign County Board Environment and Land Use Committee recognized that the rules for data centers in Champaign County were not designed with large data centers in mind, and unanimously initiated the moratorium process.
