SJO wrestling posts winning record at Robinson Duals

Led by a steady host of contributors, the St. Joseph-Ogden High School wrestling team finished 3-2 on Saturday at the Robinson Duals.


SJO defeated Cumberland 42-39, Paris 66-24 an Mt. Carmel 62-18, but lost 39-38 to Lawrenceville and 45-36 to Robinson.


The Spartans recorded six forfeit wins against Cumberland, with sophomore Holden Brazelton winning by pin at 132 pounds in 3 minutes, 11 seconds.


SJO only picked up one forfeit win against Paris, relying instead on wins in nine different weight classes. All the victories happened by pin.


Senior Owen Birt delivered the quickest pin against Paris, producing a win in only 36 seconds at 220. Sophomore Davin Alvarez also made quick work of his foe at 145, winning in 50 seconds.


Freshman Garrick Page at 106 (1:35), junior Emmitt Holt at 113 (1:09), freshman Brandon Goodwin at 126 (2:24), Brazelton at 132 (1:49), sophomore Landen Butts at 138 (2:30), freshman Coy Hayes at 152 (1:03) and freshman Devan Swisher at 160 (3:20) also recorded pins.


In the win against Mt. Carmel, the Spartans received four forfeit wins but also received pins by Goodwin in only 36 seconds at 126 and by senior Peyton Carver in only 46 seconds at 195. Brazelton at 132 (1:47), sophomore Gabriel Mata at 182 (1:03) and Birt at 220 (3:20) also came through with pins. Butts won his match at 138 via a 17-0 technical fall.


In the narrow loss to Lawrenceville, Page won by pin at 106 in 3:53 and Alvarez won in 21 seconds by pin at 145. Holt earned a 15-0 technical fall at 113 and Butts recorded a 10-7 win by decision at 138 as the Spartans also won three matches by forfeit.


The Spartans had four pins in its loss to Robinson, with Sarver picking up an impressive pin at 195 in only nine seconds. Brazelton got a pin at 132 in 59 seconds, while it took Page a minute to produce a pin at 106 and Birt registered a pin in 4:49 at 220. Holt won a 5-3 decision at 113 an Swisher won a 6-2 decision at 160.

Other early-season highlights for the Spartans so far include a 15th-place finish in the Bronze Pool at Abe’s Rumble from Dec. 29-30 in Springfield and a 10th-place team finish at the Unity Invitational on Dec. 17 that included a first-place finish from Birt at 220, a second-place finish by Brazelton at 132 and a fourth-place finish by Holt at 113. SJO also placed 14th at the 28-team Rex Avery Invitational in Petersburg on Dec. 10, with Brazelton winning the title at 132, Holt finishing second at 113 and Sarver taking seventh at 285.

What’s next
The Spartans are scheduled to wrestle Hoopeston Area and South Vermillion (Ind.) in a triangular that begins at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at South Vermillion. SJO will then travel to Fairbury this upcoming weekend for the Illini Prairie Conference Meet at Prairie Central. Wrestling is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday and then continue at 9 a.m on Saturday.
