SJO soccer knocks off Comets via penalty kicks

The St. Joseph-Ogden High School soccer team picked up its second win of the season last Friday.

The Spartans played Oakwood/Salt Fork to a scoreless tie through regulation of both teams’ opener at the Cornjerker Classic in Hoopeston before SJO prevailed 3-2 on penalty kicks.

That win, however, was the only victory SJO recorded in the last week. The Spartans lost 2-0 at home on Sept. 10 to Fisher/Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley before losing its final two matches this past Saturday at the Cornjerker Classic. SJO suffered a 6-1 loss to Iroquois West before losing 5-0 to Monticello. Monticello ended up winning the eight-team Cornjerker Classic, while Iroquois West placed third.

SJO (2-7-1) is set to return to the field for a 4:30 p.m. home match on Tuesday against Monticello that kicks off Illini Prairie Conference play for the Spartans. SJO will stay busy with conference matches the rest of the week, playing at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at St. Thomas More before hosting Chillicothe IVC at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
