Martinie, Frick propel SJO girls’ basketball in two straight wins

More losses than wins have unfolded so far this season for the St. Joseph-Ogden High School girls’ basketball team.
But the Spartans can still rewrite the narrative. And they got off to a good start last week,
winning 52-23 last Thursday night at Monticello and earning a 58-41 home win against St.
Thomas More on Jan. 16.

The two Illini Prairie Conference wins pushed SJO’s record to 9-13 overall and 3-2 in the Illini Prairie with a little more than two weeks left in the regular season.

Here’s how the Spartans pulled off those two wins and what’s next on the schedule:

Balance shines through against Monticello
The Spartans led the Sages by double digits in the first quarter and didn’t let up, cruising to the 29-point road win.

The Spartans went ahead 19-9 by the end of the first quarter and went into halftime with a
convincing 37-12 halftime lead that they increased to 45-18 by the start of the fourth quarter.

Junior forward Addy Martinie paced SJO with a game-high 12 points on the strength of two
three-pointers. Senior guard Taylor Hug (11 points) and junior guard Addison Frick (10 points) joined Martinie in double figures, with Hug making a trio of three-pointers and Frick draining two three-pointers.

Junior guard Addie Seggebruch chipped in seven points, while senior guard Olivia Baltzell
added six points on two three-pointers.

Freshman guard Katie Ericksen, senior guard Kaytlyn Baker and junior forward Ellie Ward
rounded out the scoring with two points apiece.

Frick, Seggebruch power SJO past STM
SJO ended a two-game losing skid with a convincing 17-point home win against St. Thomas
More.

The Spartans led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter and went into halftime up 30-20 before taking a commanding 50-31 lead into the fourth quarter.

Frick shined for SJO by scoring a game-high 20 points and making four three-pointers.
Seggebruch also finished in double figures with 14 points, while Martinie (nine points) and
Ericksen (seven points) factored significantly into the offensive production.

Hug (five points), freshman Timera Blackburn (two points) and Baker (one point) also entered the scoring column for SJO.

What’s next
SJO gets back into action with three games this upcoming week. The Spartans first host
Mattoon at 7:30 p.m. Monday in a nonconference game before resuming Illini Prairie play at
5:30 p.m. Friday at Bloomington Central Catholic. SJO then steps out of league play this
upcoming Saturday when the Spartans play New Berlin at 1 p.m. at Monticello as part of the
Illini Prairie/Sangamo Challenge.
