PVO to honor beloved teacher

Prairieview-Ogden will have a new award to honor one of their most beloved teachers.

Kathy Klauda, the mother of Jennifer Klauda Anderson, will support an awards program that will honor two sixth grade and two eighth grade students who participate in band or chorus.

“Everyone loved Jennifer,” Superintendent Vic White said. “So we are very excited to honor, in memory of Jen, four students.”

Anderson died in 2018 after a six-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

She had taught at PVO since 2007 after earning a master’s degree in music and saxophone performance from the University of Illinois in 2006 and graduated from Ithaca College in 2004 with a degree in music education.
Anderson taught fifth- through eighth-grade band and chorus as well as teaching junior high social studies.

White said each student selected for the award will get a plaque and some money. The amount of money will not be disclosed until the awards banquet.

In other news, the PVO Board of Education approved Sarah Krall’s resignation as Junior High Special Education Teacher and hired Chastity Thompson as a speech-language pathologist for next school year.
The board also recognized Chase Gilliland, who is a candidate for Junior High Basketball Coach of the Year from the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.

The board also approved a three-year building improvement plan. The improvements will be paid for with one percent sales tax money.

The improvement plan includes new heating and AC units in the junior high gym, remodeling the restrooms at North Elementary and install a new roof north of the gym at South Elementary.

The board also was told that Route Metro will be installing the new Fiber to PVO Jr. High School in Flatville and North Elementary in Royal this spring or summer.  Two grants are paying three-fourths of the $150,000 cost.
