Kern, Cafarelli, Carter and Atwood help SJO golf team have continued success

The St. Joseph-Ogden High School golf team has established a pretty common routine this season.

Jacob Kern or Ashten Cafarelli will typically post the Spartans’ top score. Maddux Carter and McGwire Atwood will give SJO some steady rounds to typically round out the bottom two scores used to factor into the team total, with Jack Robertson and Tyler Buss usually on the cusp of adding to the team score.

It’s a formula that produced superb results for the Spartans on the course. SJO carries a 9-3 record in dual or triangular matches as the end of the season is fast approaching.

The Spartans took a break from those types of matches on Saturday when SJO placed fifth at the 10-team Paris Invitational.

SJO compiled a team score of 346 at the 18-hole event, with St. Anthony winning the tournament with a 316. Charleston (333), a second team from St. Anthony (337), Paris (341) and SJO rounded out the top five teams.

The Spartans produced three golfers in the 80s, with Carter providing an 82 to finish seventh individually. Kern was two strokes back at 84, with Cafarelli (86) and Atwood (94) rounding out the scores for SJO.

The Spartans placed second at a triangular match involving Tri-Valley and Fisher at Indian Springs Golf Course in Saybrook on Sept. 8.

Tri-Valley took first place with a 175, while SJO was second with a 179 and Fisher was third with a 210.

Kern and Cafarelli had the top two scores on the day, with Kern winning medalist honors with a 41 and Cafarelli tying for second with a 42.

Carter added a 43, but the Spartans couldn’t get another golfer in the 40s, with Robertson providing the fourth score with a 53.

The Spartans beat Judah Christian 168-176 in a dual match at Willow Pond Golf Course in Rantoul on Sept. 6, with Kern shooting a 38 to earn co-medalist honors with Judah Christian’s Caleb McCullough. Cafarelli carded a 40, with Atwood adding a 44 and Carter contributing a 46.

SJO sustained its first two setbacks of the season during a Sept. 1 triangular at Willow Pond involving Monticello and Rantoul/Paxton-Buckley-Loda. SJO compiled a team score of 177, with Monticello (159) winning the triangular and Rantoul/PBL (173) finishing second.

Cafarelli had the lowest round for SJO with a 40, followed by a 43 from Carter, a 45 from Kern and a 49 from Atwood.

The Spartans defeated Danville 170-203 in a dual match on Aug. 31 at Turtle Run Golf Course in Danville. Kern won medalist honors with a 38, while Cafarelli (43), Atwood (44) and Carter (45) weren’t far behind.

The Spartans are set to end the regular season this upcoming week with the Illini Prairie Conference Meet set for 9 a.m. on Tuesday at Willow Pond before the Spartans play Judah Christian at 4 p.m. on Friday in a dual match at Willow Pond.
