The St. Joseph-Ogden boys’ soccer team earned its first Illini Prairie Conference win, while the Spartans’ golf team competed at the Illini Prairie Meet. Here is a quick rundown of what happened on Tuesday and Wednesday for the Spartans:
In boys’ soccer
Stevens, Harris lead Spartans
St. Joseph-Ogden cruised past visiting Unity for a 7-0 win on Tuesday at Dick Duval Field in St. Joseph.
The win marked the first Illini Prairie Conference victory of the season for the Spartans, who are now 9-3 and 1-1 in the Illini Prairie on the season after their second straight win.
Sophomore Lucas Stevens was the offensive catalyst for the Spartans since he scored four goals and handed out two assists. Senior Nico Harris added two goals, while señor Tyler Hess scored the other goal for the Spartans. Freshman Cam Daly also chipped in with two assists, while Hess provided one assist as well.
SJO now faces a busy stretch in the next week, starting at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at Monticello in another Illini Prairie match. The Spartans then play at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Georgetown-Ridge Farm/Westville in a nonconference match before playing at Danville at 4:30 p.m. next Monday and then hosting St. Thomas More at 4:30 p.m. next Tuesday.
In girls’ tennis
Farber, Warns stand out
St. Joseph-Ogden defeated Watseka 5-2 on Wednesday at Atkins Tennis Center on the University of Illinois campus in Urbana. Senior Madison Farber earned a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win at No. 1 singles, while senior Shelby Warns delivered a 1-6, 6-2, 11-9 victory at No. 2 singles and senior Audrie Helfrich won 6-7 (5), 6-2, 10-8 at No. 4 singles. The Spartans also received wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 doubles. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Nora Buckley and junior Kenley Ray won’t 6-1, 6-2 and at No. 3 doubles, junior Ava Bronowski and sophomore Korrine Travis won 6-3, 6-3.
In golf
Loschen earns all-conference honor
St. Joseph-Ogden finished eighth on Tuesday at the Illini Prairie Conference Meet held at Lake of the Woods Golf Course in Mahomet.
Monticello won the tournament by shooting a 326, followed by St. Thomas More (341) and Bloomington Central Catholic (344).
SJO senior Garrett Loschen paced the Spartans with an 84 to finish ninth and earn all-conference honors.
The Illini Prairie Meet was the final tune-up for the Spartans before they begin IHSA postseason play. SJO will tee off next Wednesday in a 16-team Class 1A regional at Willow Pond Golf Course in Rantoul hosted by Armstrong-Potomac. The top three teams and the top 10 individual scores on non-advancing teams will move on to the Monticello Sectional that takes place Oct. 5 at the University of Illinois Orange Course in Savoy.
What’s on tap
The SJO girls’ tennis team is scheduled to play at Mahomet-Seymour at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday in a dual match, while the Spartans volleyball team (11-5) hosts Unity at 7 p.m. in their first Illini Prairie Conference match of the season.
