Rose throws shutout

In baseball
After last weekend’s games at Teutopolis were rained out, the St. Joseph-Ogden High School baseball team lost to darkness on Monday night before coming through with a convincing home win against Argenta-Oreana on Tuesday.

The Spartans (7-4-1) are set to resume action at noon on Saturday at Williamsville.

SJO opened the week with a 2-2 tie in eight innings at home against Mahomet-Seymour before soundly defeating Argenta-Oreana 10-0 in five innings on Tuesday.

SJO pitcher Adam Rose was nearly unhittable in throwing a five-inning shutout against A-O. The right-hander only gave up one hit while striking out eight in leading the Spartans to a win. Rose also came through at the plate and on the basepaths with a double, two walks, three runs scored and four stolen bases.

Drew Coursey (1 for 1, two RBI), Crayton Burnett (two RBI), Nick Boggs (1 for 2, RBI), Sam Wesley (two runs scored), Kaden Jacobs (1 for 1, RBI) and Adam Frerichs (two runs scored) also produced for SJO as the Spartans took advantage of four errors by the Bombers.

SJO took a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to a sacrifice fly from Burnett before the Spartans loaded the bases with one out. Keegan McCarty put the ball in play and Frerichs came around to score on an A-O error to build the Spartans’ lead to 2-0 before Coursey walked with the bases loaded to give SJO a 3-0 lead.

Jacobs and Coursey both delivered RBI singles in the second as part of a five-running inning to stake SJO to an 8-0 lead before the Spartans made it 9-0 in the third on an RBI groundout from Burnett and 10-0 in the fourth on an RBI groundout from Brendan Cooperider.

SJO held a 2-1 lead against Mahomet-Seymour for the majority of Monday’s game before the visiting Bulldogs tied it at 2 in the top of the sixth and neither team could push across another run before the game was called after eight innings because of darkness, resulting in a 2-2 tie.

After M-S went ahead 1-0 in the top of the second, Burnett lined a two-out single to center field to score Coursey and Jaden Miller, giving SJO a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

Burnett finished 1 for 3, while Wesley went 2 for 4. Rose, Frerichs and Boggs each added singles, but the Spartans left 12 runners on base.
McCarty started and lasted 5 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and one earned run while striking out 11. Burnett threw 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief, yielding three hits and striking out two.

The Spartans are slated for two games on Saturday in Williamsville, taking on the host Bullets at noon before playing Tremont at 2 p.m. SJO is then set to host Rantoul at 4:30 p.m. next Monday in their first Illini Prairie Conference game.

The Spartans’ scheduled league opener at St. Thomas More on Thursday was postponed because of rain and is rescheduled for 4:30 p.m. on April 24.
