Tuesday’s Spartans’ sports update: SJO volleyball earns home win

The week has started off on a strong note for the St. Joseph-Ogden volleyball team.
A night after beating nonconference foe St. Teresa 25-15, 25-22 at home on Monday, the Spartans followed that up with a 25-20, 25-21 home nonconference win against Casey-Westfield on Tuesday night.

Ava Seggebruch was the main catalyst offensively for SJO on Tuesday with 12 kills and 15 digs. Tinley Ideus (four kills), Reese Wheatley (three kills) and Ava Midkiff (three kills) also contributed at the net.
Emma McKinney directed the offense to the tune of 22 assists, while Katie Ericksen (seven digs), McKinney (six digs) and Ally Schmitz (five digs) also chipped in defensively.
SJO will continue its busy stretch this week when it plays at Oakwood at 7 p.m. Wednesday, its final match this week before it returns to the court next Monday at Hoopeston Area.

In soccer
Fresh off winning a tournament championship this past Saturday at the Bomber Classic in Argenta, SJO held its own against one of the area’s best small-school programs on Tuesday afternoon.
The Spartans traveled to Fisher and left with a 3-3 tie against host Fisher/Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley.
The Spartans trailed 1-0 at halftime before taking a 3-2 lead late in the second half before the Bunnies scored another goal to force a tie.

Zach Harper, Alex Acosta and Davin Alvarez each scored a goal for SJO (7-2-1), which is unbeaten in its last seven matches. Tyler Hess and Harper each distributed an assist.

Tuesday’s match in Fisher was the Spartans’ fifth in the last week, and SJO will have a bit of time to rest before its next match when it plays at Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin at 10 a.m. Saturday.

In golf
St. Joseph-Ogden defeated Armstrong-Potomac in a dual match at Brookhill Golf Course in Rantoul on Tuesday, with the Spartans compiling a team score of 179. A-P was 14 strokes back and finished with a 193.

Asher Pruemer of SJO won medalist honors by carding a 42, with teammates Garrett Lochsen only one shot back with a 43.

Devan Swisher and Graham Ray each came through with a 47 to help back up the efforts of Pruemer and Loschen.

The Spartans are scheduled to be back on the golf course next Monday afternoon when they tee off at the Champaign County tournament that will take place at Lincolnshire Fields Country Club in Champaign.
