SJO volleyball shines in first week

High expectations surround the St. Joseph-Ogden volleyball program every fall.

That’s what happens when regular-season success and postseason success seem to transpire each season.

The 2023 SJO volleyball team is off to a good start in keeping the tradition of success rolling.
The Spartans won their first three matches in the opening week of the season and will strive for a 4-0 start when they play at St. Teresa on Monday night.

The Spartans opened the season on Aug. 21 with a come-from-behind 24-26, 25-27, 25-19 nonconference win at Maroa-Forsyth.

Senior Peyton Williams delivered in a big way for the Spartans with 16 kills, six digs and four aces.

Fellow senior Addie Roesch was also clutch with 10 kills, six digs, two blocks and two aces. Seniors Sadie Ericksen (eight digs, two aces) and Halle Brazelton (24 assists) were also instrumental in the season-opening win.

The Spartans easily won their home opener on Aug. 23, with SJO cruising past nonconference opponent St. Anne 25-7, 25-15.

Brazelton handed out 13 assists and made five digs, while Williams supplied seven kills, five aces and three digs. Roesch also contributed with six kills, four digs and one ace.

The Spartans wrapped up their first week by outlasting host Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin 25-12, 29-27 last Thursday night for a nonconference victory.

Williams finished with seven kills, six digs and two aces, while junior Ava Seggebruch had four kills and two digs. Brazelton (17 assists, three digs) and Roesch (three kills, three digs, two aces) also came through with timely plays.

After Monday night’s match at St. Teresa, the Spartans are set to host Mahomet-Seymour at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

SJO is then scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Teutopolis before playing in the Mattoon Invitational this Saturday.
